So far this year in our Bible classes we have learned the importance of patience and how Hannah learned to be patient that the Lord would give her a son. Did God answer her prayer? Yes, a son named Samuel was born to her. Then, last time we learned how we should be attentive and listen when God speaks to us in His Word, the Bible. We should also be attentive when God puts other people in our life like our parents or our teachers. This month, we learned the story of David and Goliath. David showed courage when he went out to fight the giant. Courage means doing what’s right even when I am afraid. Have you ever been afraid to do the right thing?
Young David was a shepherd and took care of his father’s sheep. One day, David’s father gave him a special job to do. He was to go find his older brothers who were fighting in the army and bring them some food. While David was there visiting his brothers, he heard the shouts of one of the Philistines who were their enemy. The man shouting was a giant named Goliath. The Bible says he was over 9 feet tall and very strong. He wanted the army of Israel to send out one of their men to fight him, but all the soldiers from Israel were too afraid to fight him. Even the king of Israel, Saul, was afraid to fight the giant. But when David heard the giant’s words and that he was speaking against their God, he said that he would go and fight the giant. And you probably know the end of the story. David had courage to do the right thing and go fight the giant. God gave David and Israel a great victory that day. David defeated the giant, not because he was a good soldier, but because God gave him the courage and strength to do it.

God will do the same thing for you. Even though we don’t have to worry about any 9-foot giants, we do run into problems that seem as big or even bigger. One example is peer pressure when others try to get you to do something you know is wrong. It takes courage to do the right thing when your friends make fun of you. It takes courage to let your friends know you love Jesus and want to please God with your life. It takes courage to be a friend to someone whom others are bullying or picking on. But just like God gave David courage to do the right thing even when he might have been afraid, that same God can give you the courage to take a stand for what’s right.
Our memory verse this month comes from Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous: for the Lord your God is with you.” Those are the words God spoke to Joshua just before he led his people into the Promised Land. Joshua needed courage because he had already seen what was waiting for him and his army on the other side of the Jordan River. There were many giants in the land who were much bigger and stronger than he and his soldiers were. There were also big walls protecting some of the cities that his army didn’t have the weapons to get through. Joshua might have been afraid of what was going to happen to them. But on that day, God assured Joshua that He would give them victory over the enemy. They just needed to have courage and trust that the Lord would go before them. That’s exactly what Joshua did, and God gave them many victories over their enemies. Read that verse from Joshua 1:9 again and then ask God to give you the courage you need to face the giants and the walls in your life.
