So far in our lessons this school year we have learned some important lessons abut how God wants us to live. We read about patience as Hannah had to be patient in waiting on God to give her a son named Samuel. We learned the importance of being attentive as young Samuel listened to what God had to say to him. Then we saw the courage of young David who was willing to fight against the giant Goliath in order to honor God’s name. We learned the importance of friendship as David became friends with Jonathan, the son of the king. In today’s lesson we want to see the importance of respect. Respect means to treat others with care because God wants me to. There are certain people God puts into our lives who deserve our respect. Some examples include your parents, grandparents, and your teachers.
One of the first things we talk about when you come to Camp Victory is the importance of respect. We want you to treat everyone at camp just like you want to be treated. In our Bible lesson this month (found in 1 Samuel 22-24, and 26), we find David’s respect for King Saul, the first king of Israel, even though the king mistreated him. The main reason David and Jonathan had to part ways even though they remained friends is because of the threats King Saul had made on David’s life. These threats were because Saul was jealous of David and didn’t want to keep hearing the people praising David. He began hunting David and his men down with hopes of getting rid of them.
Yet, in spite of those actions and threats, David remained loyal to the king because he knew God wanted him to respect those in authority, even if they were not doing the right things. On at least two different occasions in the Bible chapters we just mentioned, David had an opportunity to kill the king and stop the attacks. Both times David refused and then let the king know it was out of respect.
Is that the kind of respect you show to those who are in authority over you, even those who may not treat you right? You may never be in a situation like David, where one of those people is trying to harm you, but you probably know some who do not love God and want to please Him or obey Him like you do. Even in those circumstances, God wants us to honor and respect our leaders. Our memory verse this month is Hebrews 13:17 “Obey those who rule over you and be submissive.”
Think of some ways you can honor and respect those God puts in your life. It’s not always easy to do that, especially with those who are not nice to you or just ignore you. But God can give you the strength to do the right thing if you ask Him to. God honored the respect David showed to King Saul and others, and He rewarded him for doing the right thing. David eventually became the next King of Israel and because he honored God, there were many people in Israel who showed King David the respect he deserved. Go be a David and see how God blesses you so that you can be a blessing and help to others.
